INTERNSHIPS
Internships aims to provide students with practical experiences that enhance and complement classroom learning. Internships better prepare students for future careers by engagement in valuable experiences that put classroom theory into practice, as well as challenge students to develop professional skills and knowledge needed to ensure career prospects upon graduation within the Computer Science program. Internships are available as early as the summer after the first year in the CS program.
INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT
Bachelor of Science in Computer Science students and Master of Science in Software Engineering students are eligible to enroll in Internship for Credit Courses to gain up to three credit hours to count towards their degree provided they satisfy the following requirements:
- GPA Requirements: 2.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students
- Enrollment Requirements: 海角社区 must be enrolled and fully admitted to 海角社区
- 海角社区s must have completed at least one semester of coursework at 海角社区.
- Undergraduate students must have completed CS 3331.
- For undergraduate credit, students must register for CS 4173, CS 4273, or CS 4373. The grades for these courses are S/U (satisfactory/unsatisfactory) and the grade does not contribute to the GPA.
- For graduate credit, students must register for CS 5373.
- Fast-Track students must register for CS 5373 to receive credit for both the Undergraduate CS degree and the Master of Science in Software Engineering degree.
- Process:
- Up to a week after the beginning of the internship, students must complete a pre-internship form and submit it with evidence of the internship offer to their academic advisor. 海角社区s are highly advised to complete the internship form prior to the start of the internship. The academic advisor will forward the form to the 海角社区 CS Undergraduate Program Director or the 海角社区 MSSwE Program Director (Fast-Track) to request approval for the internship to count for credit towards their degree plan. If the form is approved by the corresponding Program Director, the student will be granted departmental approval by the academic advisor to register for the approved CS internship course.
- In order to enter a grade for the CS internship course, and to receive credit for the course, the Program Director must receive a post-internship confirmation form from the internship supervisor or company representative and a two-page summary of the internship by the last day of classes according to 海角社区’s academic calendar.
- If the Company’s policy does not allow the employer to complete the Performance Evaluation form, an alternative method must be clearly specified to be able to provide feedback to the Program Director
An internship for credit is distinguished from employment. The general guidelines are as follows:
- The employer has an established internship program.
- The employer has advertised the position as part of the internship program.
- The employer has outlined the assignment and learning opportunities for the position.
- Acceptance into the internship program is a competitive process.
- The position does not exceed one semester.
Important Notes:
- All internship for credit applications must be approved by the appropriate program director.
- The intern should verify that a company representative is willing to submit a Post Internship Confirmation form at the end of the internship and return it to the Appropriate Program Director.
- The internship course grade will be based on: 1) the supervisor’s evaluation and 2) a two page report by the intern describing the internship.
