海角社区 CS students participate in the MSEIP AFRL Summer 2023 Intern Program
海角社区 CS students participated in the MSEIP Summer 2023 Intern Program with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). Natalia Mesta Valenzuela, Gustavo Rubio, Luis Del Campo, and Gustavo Ramirez are majoring in Computer Science. The students spent the summer in Rome, NY, working with AFRL mentors.
"What I found most enjoyable about my internship were the abundant learning experiences, the inspiring mentors, and the valuable networking opportunities. I had the chance to work with advanced large language models, enhancing my knowledge and skills in the field of artificial intelligence." Natalia Mesta Valenzuela
“During my internship, I had the extraordinary opportunity to delve into the field of machine learning. What truly captivated me throughout this experience was the exceptional work environment that thrived on friendship and support. This experience has undoubtedly equipped me with a broader perspective and a solid foundation for my future endeavors in cutting-edge technologies.” Luis Del Campo
What advice would you give to upcoming CS students that are thinking of applying to internships?
"Internship applications can be highly competitive, and rejection is a common part of the process. It is vital to understand that each rejection should not be perceived as a reflection of one's abilities or potential. Remember, the path to success often entails overcoming hurdles, and the experiences gained along the way will ultimately contribute to your growth and development." Gustavo Rubio
"While many students primarily focus on securing internships, I urge you to also explore REUs (Research Experiences for Undergraduates). Surprisingly, REUs often receive far fewer applications, increasing your likelihood of acceptance. The best part? Most REUs offer full financial support, including paid positions, travel, and food plus the opportunity to travel and gain international exposure." Luis Del Campo
"Be proactive, take initiative, and go beyond assigned tasks. Do not be afraid to ask questions or seek feedback and learn from it. In addition, build relationships with your colleagues and make the best out of your time to learn as much as you can. " Gustavo Ramirez
