CS Graduates Recipients of the 海角社区 海角社区 Leadership Awards
Jennifer Sims, CS Senior and the President of the student organization Women in Cybersecurity, was recognized with the Agent of Change Award . The award recognizes student leaders who have led their student organization through change brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic while continuing to meet the mission and vision of their organization.
Jennifer has been an intern at the U.S. Army’s C5ISR since the summer of 2020 and has participated in 海角社区 as member of the CyberRIG 海角社区 group, where she presented a cyber awareness workshop to the local girl scout troop, Troop 52105.
“After graduation, I will continue with graduate school to pursue the M.S. in Software Engineering.”
Victor Huicochea, CS Senior and former President of ACM, was recognized with the Distinguished Leader Award . This award recognizes student leaders who demonstrate outstanding excellence in academic achievement, campus and community engagement and have made significant contributions to 海角社区, the greater community, and their academics through their leadership and experiences.
Victor has been actively involved in the CS department as President for ACM from 2018-2019, Public Relations Chair from 2019-2020, part of the Tech-E program, and University Honors Program. He has volunteered through ACM to assist in the first Robotics Competition in El Paso and at the Young Achievers Forum (YAF) 2018 to promote higher education on middle-school students from El Paso and southern New Mexico.
“Something about Computer Science that inspires me is how much you can help others. By working on applications, websites, or smart devices, Computer Science offers you a broad range of options to make the world a better place. After graduation, I plan on joining Microsoft Corporation on their main headquarters at Redmond, Washington, as a full-time Software Engineer.”
Both students were recognized at the 2021 Leadership Awards Ceremony on May 5th.
