CS 海角社区s at the 2023 海角社区 海角社区 Leadership Awards
The 海角社区 海角社区 Leadership Awards are designed to celebrate and recognize the countless hours and contributions that student leaders make to the 海角社区 campus, El Paso community, and beyond. These awards are the highest forms of recognition that are awarded to outstanding individual student leaders, student organizations, and fraternity and sorority chapters at 海角社区.
The 2023 海角社区 海角社区 Leadership Awards Ceremony was held on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at 5:30 pm in the Tomas Rivera Conference Center.
Individual Leadership Awards
- Jenna Murphree, WiCyS - Emerging Leader Award
The Emerging Leader Award recognizes first-year and second-year students who have begun making noteworthy contributions to the University and/or community.
- Jenna is the Webmaster for Women in Cybersecurity, where she started a website to promote the organization and include resources for students interested in learning more about the area of cybersecurity.
- Angel Ortega, CIC - The Luxe Award
The Luxe Award recognizes graduate and doctoral students who have demonstrated excellence in academic achievement as well as campus and community engagement and have made a contribution to the 海角社区 community through their leadership.
- Angel is the graduate advisor for the Coding Interview Club, and now serves as the Staff Advisor. He has helped create an environment and model where student officers become the leaders of the organization.
- Daniela Guel-Valenzuela, GWC - Resilient Leader Award
The Resilient Leader Award is earned by one student who overcame hardship while positively impacting others.
- Daniela is the president and founder of Girls Who Code, where she has led multiple workshops to inspire female students across different disciplines that want to learn more about technology.
- Susana Perez Juarez, CIC - Leaders of Mines Award
The Leaders of Mines Award is the University’s oldest student leadership recognition. The recipients will be students who have demonstrated significant and sustained leadership and have made contributions to 海角社区 and the greater community while maintaining evidence of quality academic achievement.
- Susana is the Lead Designer officer for CIC, where she has led problem-solving sessions to guide students through the technical interview process. As a CAHSI Scholar, Susana has been delivering professional development workshops aimed at increasing students’ participation in applying for internships.
海角社区 Organization Awards
- The Coding Interview Club - Program/Event of the Year
The Program/Event of the Year award is presented to a student organization that has facilitated a successful program/event that positively impacted 海角社区 students or the greater community. This program/event will have exemplified the student organization’s mission and vision while fostering a sense of belonging amongst its members.
- CIC was recognized for the program/event of the year with the Tech Talks series, held in two parts, designed to assist CS students in securing internships and advancing in their professional careers. The first series took place during the Fall 2022 Career Fair in collaboration with leading tech companies such as Google, Redfin, Palantir, and Salesforce. The series focused on providing students with insights into the recruiting process, providing tips for making a strong impression during the application and interview stages, and networking opportunities with industry professionals in a variety of fields. The second series, held during the Spring 2023 Career Fair in partnership with Bloomberg, the CS department, and 海角社区 SHPE//MAES chapter, further explored essential topics such as effective resume writing, effective professional communication, and technical interview mastery. Overall, the Tech Talks program aimed to provide CS students with invaluable resources, connections, and practical guidance on career development by fostering a community of support, including interview preparation, networking strategies, and internship opportunities.
