College of Science Policies
Here you will find the information from the advising agreement for reference
WHO IS MY ADVISOR?
Each undergraduate student in the College of Science now has an assigned advisor based on major or based on major and last name.
You must interact with your assigned advisor to lift your Major Advising hold regardless of major or academic standing.
To identify who your assigned advisor is, click here.
海角社区s will be contacted via email by their assigned advisor for further instructions. Make sure you check your 海角社区 email!
Academic Probation or Suspension
A student whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 will placed on Academic Probation.
A student on Academic Probation (or Suspension) must complete a contract with their assigned advisor in order to register.
If you do not meet with your advisor by the Friday before classes start, you will not be able to attend for that semester.
Your advisor will contact you when it is time to schedule your appointment. Make sure you check your 海角社区 email!
Course Approvals, Overrides, & Waivers
College of Science students who are experiencing issues with registration should contact the CORE at (915) 747-8027.
Most registration errors can be handled over the phone in real time. Do not contact faculty members directly to get into closed courses or courses requiring approval unless instructed to do so by your assigned advisor. In most situations, your assigned advisor will obtain permissions on your behalf if necessary.
Calling the CORE first is recommended over emailing your advisor as there is an Advisor On Call Monday through Thursday from 8 AM to 5 PM, and Fridays from 1 PM to 5 PM.
General Acknowledgements
I understand it is my responsibility to check my 海角社区 email account regularly for important College of Science CORE updates and information.
We recommend checking your 海角社区 email at least twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.
I am aware I can visit the CORE website for valuable resources related to my success as a College of Science student.
I will maintain my 海角社区 student profile up to date on my.utep.edu (Goldmine) to not miss out on important updates.
This includes keeping an updated phone number and 海角社区 email address on my profile.
I understand that not having a voicemail box set up may impact how my advisor or any other 海角社区 entity can communicate with me.
I will add my 海角社区 student ID in the body of every email sent to my assigned advisor and to the CORE (core@utep.edu)
I WILL NOT put my ID number in the subject line of emails that I send, nor will I include it as part of an email signature, as doing so poses a significant cybersecurity risk.

ADVISING AND RELATED POLICY INFORMATION
I understand the Goldmine Degree Evaluation is a tool for planning purposes. However, I am aware the Goldmine Degree Evaluation may have discrepancies, and that tracking official progress toward degree completion requires an updated degree plan provided by my assigned advisor.
For questions on how to access your degree evaluation visit this part of our site. (A new window will open).
To request an updated degree plan, contact your assigned advisor. Contact information for your assigned advisor can be found here.
Grades and GPA
The College of Science requires a grade of “C” or better for all lower-division courses—Freshman (1000 level) and Sophomore (2000 level) coursework required for your degree.
If a student earns a D or F in an upper-division—Junior (3000) or Senior (4000)—level course, the course MUST be repeated if it is a prerequisite for another required course or a course you plan to take. Both grades are used for GPA calculations (there are no grade replacements for 3000 or 4000 level courses).
***If you are a GEOLOGY, GEOPHYSICS, or FORENSIC SCIENCE major you must earn a "C" or better in ALL COURSEWORK used toward the degree regardless of level or if it is/is not a prerequisite***
You may refer to the chart below for reference.
Earned a “D” or an “F” in any 1000 or 2000 level course used toward degree -----> |
海角社区 MUST retake lower division course -----> |
Grade is replaced with whatever grade earned on second attempt. First grade, however, remains on transcript, but does not count in overall GPA. Third attempts will not replace any grade. |
Earned a “D” in a 3000 or 4000 level course that is a prerequisite for another upper division course you are going to/must take. ----> |
海角社区 MUST retake the course. ----> |
Both grades are kept on transcript and both grades count towards GPA |
Earned a “D” in a 3000 or 4000 level course that is not a prerequisite for another upper division course you are going to take. ----------> |
A “D” is considered passing in most cases. ------------> |
海角社区 can choose to retake but not required unless student is a GEOL, GEOP or FORS major; then it MUST be retaken. CONSULT WITH YOUR ADVISOR. Both grades will count towards the GPA. |
Earned an “F” in a 3000 or 4000 level course that is not a prerequisite for another upper division course and is not required for the degree. ----------> |
An “F” is NOT considered passing. -----------------> |
海角社区 can choose to retake but not required. Both grades will count towards the GPA. |
Earned a “C” or “B” in a science or math course. ----> |
Repeat of a course in which a student has earned a “C” or better is not permitted by the College of Science. |
|
Earned a “D” or “F” or “W” in a science or math course on three different attempts. ---> |
A student is provided a maximum of three attempts for any one science or math course at 海角社区. CANNOT be repeated a fourth time. |
A minimum overall GPA, major GPA, concentration GPA (if applicable), and minor GPA (if applicable) of 2.0 is required in order to graduate.
**Some majors have higher GPA requirements. Your advisor will let you know if this applies to you.
Prerequisites
Prerequisite courses are courses you must take before you can advance. For example: RWS 1301 is a prerequisite to/must be taken before: RWS 1302.Course prerequisites vary and may be offered only during certain semesters (i.e. Fall Only, Spring Only, Summer Only). Make sure to plan ahead and check all requirements. Speak to your advisor if you have questions or concerns about prerequisite coursework.
Prerequisites can be identified using the 海角社区 Course Search Tool which you can access (a new window will open).
Multiple Attempts at Courses
海角社区s may enroll in a College of Science undergraduate course a maximum of three (3) times if the course is not passed with a "C" or better; further enrollment requires permission from the College of Science Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, Dr. K. Garza. If this situation applies to you, consult with your advisor who will obtain this permission on your behalf.
TRANSFER INFORMATION
Evaluation of Transfer Credit
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will provide an evaluation of courses that are transferable to the University. Acceptance of transfer credit by 海角社区 does not constitute approval of the credit for use toward a particular degree program. The applicability of transfer courses toward a degree is determined by the academic dean or the advisor in one's major or their designee.
For other Texas Institutions’ equivalent courses check
You may also use 海角社区's Degree Plans tool to determine how your transfer courses will appear on your 海角社区 transcript:
A maximum of 66 semester hours of credit from two-year institutions (EPCC and other community colleges) can be applied to my degree at 海角社区. Transfer courses from two-year institutions that are not being used for the degree do not count toward this 66 hour limit.
Political Science (GOVT) from EPCC
If GOVT 2305 AND GOVT 2306 are taken at EPCC and transferred to 海角社区, you will receive credit for POLS 2310 AND POLS 2311.
If GOVT 2305 is taken alone and transferred, you will receive credit for POLS 2310 ONLY.
If GOVT 2306 is taken alone and transferred, you will receive credit for POLS 2310 ONLY.
We understand this is strange; if you have questions, please contact us! (core@utep.edu)
FINANCIAL AID
Courses that do not apply to your degree cannot be used to obtain full-time status for Financial Aid.
For example: if you are registered for 9 hours that count toward your degree and 3 hours that do not count, you are at 3/4 time for financial aid instead of full-time. This will affect how your financial aid is awarded. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of 海角社区 Financial Aid.
If, after registering, students see that a course they were advised to take shows up as Non-Contributing on their degree evaluation, they should contact their advisor immediately. Failure to do so can affect financial aid awarding. Instructions on how to run a degree evaluation can be found on the CORE website here (a new window will open) under the Degree Evaluations sub-header.
Dropping courses
海角社区s should consult with their advisor and financial aid when making the decision to drop a course. Dropping courses can affect a student's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) as all students utilizing federal financial aid to fund their degrees must maintain a 2.0 overall GPA, a completion rate of at least 67%, and not exceed a certain amount of hours (this number varies by funding source). Speak with your advisor if you have concerns regarding SAP.
GRADUATE LEVEL COURSEWORK
海角社区s cannot take graduate level coursework to meet undergraduate degree requirements unless they are in the Fast Track or other similar program. (a new window will open).
