Minor in Leadership Studies
MINOR IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES
The minor in Leadership Studies will offer a flexible but in-depth study of leadership and its effects on society. The minor is designed to provide an understanding of leadership theory and will improve student leadership styles to develop competencies in the domain of leadership through lenses of social justice, ethical leadership, and community engagement (SEC). The primary educational objectives of the proposed minor are to introduce, nurture, and develop leaders who possess deep and broad knowledge of the discipline while considering concepts of social issues, ethical leadership, and community engagement as they apply to their primary area of study.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
- It requires a total of 18 credit hours (six courses) to complete the minor.
- We offer Community Engagement and Leadership (CEL) designation courses. CEL designation courses are: Courses with integrated, structured community-based projects and activities connected to course learning objectives where engagement with community partners is equally beneficial to the student and community partners.
- It provides students with the requisite knowledge base necessary for developing careers as leaders and managers.
- Graduates will possess a broad understanding of leadership concepts, know how to apply these concepts in a rapidly changing environment and be able to adapt these concepts to their particular areas of specialization and content areas specific to their individual career goals and objectives.
REQUIRED COURSES
LEAD 1300: Introduction to Leadership
Initiates you to fundamental principles of leadership. The course will develop your understanding of leadership theory and your ability to apply theory in real-world contexts. Over the semester, your learning will be shaped by classroom lectures, class discussions, team-building activities, guest speakers, and assignments.
LEAD 2300: Leadership in Action
Is an introduction to community-engaged pedagogies, knowledge, skills, and competencies for responsible service and leadership in diverse communities. This course prepares students for a lifetime of engaged, accountable, and active community involvement and leadership.
LEAD 4350: Leadership and Social Change
An introduction and overview of the field of leadership within the context of social justice and ethical leadership through contemporary readings. The course will provide students with an opportunity to gain exposure to the language of SJ leadership, theories, and styles.
LEAD 4351: Community Engaged Leadership
海角社区s will gain a basic understanding of how to be leaders in applying principles of community engagement in organizational settings. With the course’s design grounded in community-based practice, students will complete the course with the skills necessary to dynamically engage different stakeholder sectors, lead the collaborative design of strategic plans, promote multi-level cohesion, and communicate to different audiences.
