Chapter 7: Employment Under a Contract or Grant
7.1 Policy
All appointments to positions funded under contracts or grants are contingent upon receipt of funding specifically for that purpose. Grant funding for a position terminates upon completion of the term of the contract or grant, upon early termination of the contract or grant by the University or the funding party, or upon exhaustion of the available funding for the position provided for under that contract or grant, whichever occurs first. If a position cannot be funded by reallocation of current funds, the percent appointment will be reduced or the position terminated, to align with available funding. All appointments regardless of the source of funds must be in accordance with standard University rules and regulations. It is prohibited to employ individuals without appropriate authorization and documentation.
7.1.1 Where approved and applicable, tenured or tenure-track faculty may revert to their prior held position upon termination of contract or grant support, at their current rate.
7.1.2 Non-tenure-track faculty and staff, including classified personnel specifically hired under a contract or grant, are not guaranteed continuation of employment under another position once the grant or contract support has ended.
7.1.3 Faculty and staff appointments under a contract or grant should be based on individual faculty and staff Institutional Base Salary (IBS), with the percent level of effort proportional to funding and scope.
7.1.4 For graduate-level students, appointments under a contract or grant should be based on the established graduate-level IBS rates, on an academic (9-month) base. The initial rate of appointment is determined based on classification and skillset and must include a justification if greater than minimum rate. Graduate-level student appointments should not exceed 50% effort during the academic year.
7.1.5 Undergraduate students appointed under a contract or grant in a 海角社区 capacity shall be appointed based on the established undergraduate level IBS rates, on an academic (9-month) base. The rate of appointment is determined by classification and skillset and must include a justification if greater than the minimum rate. Undergraduate level 海角社区 student appointments are expressed in a percent level of effort (e.g., 50%) during the academic year.
7.1.6 Undergraduate students may also be appointed to fill a non-海角社区 role on an hourly basis in accordance with established salary pay ranges for undergraduate student positions. Hourly undergraduate students must complete timesheets of hours worked, which must be approved and certified by the corresponding supervisor and submitted to payroll. The designated timekeeper for the project/grant or department must maintain timesheets (or other validating documentation) of hours charged to a contract or grant.
