TOEFL Online (BYOP)
The Institutional Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is used to evaluate the English proficiency of students whose first language is not English. It evaluates the student’s knowledge of English at the intermediate to advanced levels of English language studies.
The Institutional TOEFL test is only valid at 海角社区. If you need to take the TOEFL test for another institution, you will need to register on the .
Who is required to take the TOEFL Online (BYOP) Test?
Undergraduate Admissions – The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will consider all relevant information to determine if you are required to take the TOEFL. Call the Office of Admissions and Recruitment at 915-747-5890
Graduate Admissions – The Office of Graduate 海角社区 Services will determine which tests you need to take for admission to Graduate School. Call the Graduate 海角社区 office at 915-747-5491
Please make sure that you check accordingly before taking this test, there are no refunds.
In order to participate, complete the following steps prior to the test session: DOWNLOAD the Test Take Procedures HERE
- Your proctor will send you a reminder of the test procedures as well.
- You must use a Windows® computer with administrative privileges for testing. Mac®,
Chromebook™, iPad®, or other devices are not compatible with BYOP Remote Proctoring
sessions. See Minimum System Requirements.
Note: If you only have any of the devices above do not register for an virtual examination unless you borrow a computer with Windows on it or you will will have to come in person.
Payment and Registration
Determine if you need to take the test
Pay the test fee ($42) and Register –
THE TEST FEE IS NON-REFUNDABLE AND NON-TRANSFERABLE.
Note: A non-refundable convenience fee of $3.50 will be applied for online payments.
Preparing before the Test
1) You will need a computer with Windows (desktop or laptop and headphones only of audio portion) with a webcam and audio capabilities. If you have a Mac®, Chromebook™, iPad®, or other devices are not compatible with BYOP Remote Proctoring sessions. See Minimum System Requirements.

2) You will need to download the TOEFL® Secure Browser (Home). You will use this
browser to take the test. Navigate to . Click Download Secure Browser
3) You will receive an email from the proctor the day before the test with more instructions. example of instructions.
4) You must perform a System Check here to make sure your computer and internet connection will allow you to complete the test on test day. This check must be performed on the same computer and internet connection you plan to test with, and should be performed about the same time of day you are scheduled to test. The System Check tests a variety of things such as your operating system, browser, display settings and internet speed.
If any of the checks fail, please ensure that you meet minimum system requirements. Before running the system check, change the language on your computer to English. If you do not change the language, the computer will fail the system check even if it meets the minimum requirements.

6) You will need a need to find a quiet place alone where you will be undisturbed and not allowed to talk to anyone while testing.
Day of the Test
- LOCATION: The comfort of your own home.
- Must be in a quiet place alone where you will be undisturbed and not allowed to talk to anyone while testing.
- You will receive written communication from your proctor containing a Session Number for your test. Note: Please be sure to join the remote proctoring session on time. If you arrive 15 minutes after the starting time, you may not be approved to take the test during this session.
1. Close all applications on your computer.
2. Double click the TOEFL Secure Browser (Home) from your Downloads folder
- IDENTIFICATION:
- You will be required to present an official UNEXPIRED identification card with a current photo.
Acceptable forms of identification include each ID must:
• Be an original document; photocopies will not be accepted
• Be valid; expired documents (bearing expiration dates that have passed) are not acceptable
• Include the test taker’s full name, matching exactly the name used to register, excluding accents or spaces
• Include a recent photograph that clearly matches the test taker’s appearance
• Include the test taker’s signature (the name and signature on the ID document must match)
Acceptable Primary ID Documents
The following ID documents are acceptable for admission to a test center within the test taker’s country of citizenship:
• Passport with name, photograph and signature
• Driver’s license with photograph and signature
• State or Province ID card, including those issued by motor vehicle agencies, with photograph and signature
• National ID with photograph and signature
• Military ID with photograph and signature

- Acceptable Supplemental ID Documents
- You may be required to provide a supplemental ID
in addition to your primary ID if the test center staff
questions your primary ID document for any reason, or
if your primary ID document is otherwise acceptable
but is missing your full name, photograph or signature.
• Supplemental ID documents cannot be used to resolve
name discrepancies. The name on your primary ID must
exactly match the name you used when you registered,
excluding accent marks and spaces. If you cannot
provide a supplemental ID listed below that contains
your signature, you can present 2 government-issued IDs
with photographs, as long as they are in the same name
you used when you registered.

• 海角社区 ID - Confirmation of Identity Letter from your educational institution: If you do not have a passport, or if your passport does not include your signature and photograph, a letter on official letterhead from the school you most recently attended is an acceptable supplemental ID document. The letter must have your photograph glued (not stapled) to it, and the title, signature and seal of the official who issued the letter must overlap the photograph, as shown below. 海角社区 letters are valid for one year after date of issue.

Unacceptable ID Documents
The following documents are not acceptable as primary or
supplemental ID under any circumstances:
• Any document that is photocopied or expired
• Any document that does not match exactly the name you
used when you registered

- International driver’s license
- Draft classification card
- International student ID
- Credit/debit card of any kind
- Notary-prepared letter or document
- Birth certificate
- Social Security card
- Employee ID
- Any temporary ID
- Diplomatic, consulate or embassy ID
- Approximately 10‐15 minutes before your appointment time, review the policies in the meeting invitation email and prepare your testing environment.
- Step 1- Prepare your Testing Location
- You must use the computer and internet connection on which you performed the system checks. You can have only one computer monitor.
- You must test in a quiet, well‐lit, private location. Light source should not be behind you.
- Use a personal computer and network to take the exam. If you need to schedule time in advance to reserve a quiet space, please do so ahead of your appointment.
- Public locations such as coffee shops and computer labs are not permitted.
- Use of a private internet connection such as corporate networks, hotel networks or government connections will likely prohibit the use of the required technology due to the network's firewalls.
- Clear the area of notes, books, smart watches, tablets and any other items.
- Cell phones and other electronic devices must be removed from the area.
- Food and drinks are not permitted during testing.
- You may not leave your seat during the test administration.
- If scratch paper is permitted for your test,
- You may not take notes on regular paper, for security purposes.
- You may take notes using one of the following: Whiteboard with erasable marker, Paper with transparent sheet protector and erasable marker
- You will be asked to erase all notes in view of the proctor at the end of the test.
- Step 1- Prepare your Testing Location
If you fail to comply with these regulations, you may be asked to leave the testing room and your test may not be scored. The test administrator has the right to request that ETS not score a test taker’s exam if the test taker did not follow instructions or if the test administrator suspects that the test taker cheated. No scores will be reported for that test taker.
Important Instructions
• You must enable video and open the Chat window.
• Make sure you are in Gallery view so small tiles display on the screen.
• Background disguise is not permitted.
• Do not open the TOEFL Audio Browser before signing into the meeting.
• Please be sure to join the meeting on time. If you arrive 15 minutes after the starting time, you will not be able to take the test during this session.
Scores
You will receive a score report after you complete the test. Please allow 24-48 hours for the scores to be in the 海角社区 system.
IMPORTANT: The examinee is the ONLY person authorized to pick up score reports with current and valid picture identification. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Undergraduate Admissions- Minimum passing score is 500
- If score is 500-599:
- Pay and register for TSI
- Pay and register for Accuplacer ESL
- If score is 600 or above:
- Pay and register for TSI
- Minimum passing score varies from 550 - 600

Test Length
The Institutional TOEFL takes approximately 2.5 hours.
The test is computer-based has three multiple-choice sections:
- Listening Comprehension – this section measures the ability to understand English as it is spoken in the United States.
- Structure and Written Expression – this section measures the ability to recognize language that is appropriate for standard written English.
- Reading Comprehension – this section measures the ability to understand non-technical reading matter.
Retake Policy
You may retake the Institutional TOEFL once a month.
PROHIBITED ITEMS
FOOD, DRINKS, HATS, MECHANICAL PENCILS, ALL TYPES OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES, ALL TYPES OF WATCHES, AND CONCEALED HANDGUNS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE TEST ROOM!
