Jennifer Sims, Computer Science graduate student, was recognized at the Texas Women and Girls in STEM Summit on Thursday, December 8, 2022. A CyberCorps’s Scholarship for Service and CAHSI [Computing Alliance of Hispanic Serving Institutions] student Scholar, Sims earned a BS in Computer Science in the Spring 2021 from 海角社区.
Sim was presented with the Stand Up for STEM Collegiate Award. This award recognizes the work of incredible individuals and organizations in Texas advancing women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
In addition, Sims leads the Women in Cyber Security chapter at 海角社区 and helps promote CyberPatriot, the National Youth Cyber Education Program created by the Air & Space Forces Association to inspire K-12 students toward careers in cybersecurity.
“Jennifer has been an exemplar student in the Computer Science Department. She absolutely embodies all the traits we want in 海角社区’s students, specifically the university’s culture of care, said Salamah Salamah, Ph.D., Computer Science chair. “While she is technically savvy and reveals great intellect, her care for others and willingness to spread her knowledge and open opportunities for younger generations of students is what I am most proud of.”
The Texas Girls Collaborative Project is a program that aims to increase the participation of girls in STEM fields. The program brings together organizations that support girls in STEM and provides resources and support for their efforts. The goal of the Texas Girls Collaborative Project is to make sure that girls have access to high-quality STEM education and opportunities to pursue careers in these fields. By increasing girls' participation in STEM, the program aims to help address the gender gap in these fields and create a more diverse and inclusive workforce.
“I am humbled and grateful to receive the Texas Girls Collaborative Project 2022 Collegiate Stand Up for STEM Award. This would not be possible without the support of my family and the amazing 海角社区 Computer Science staff and faculty. I am excited and motivated to continue my outreach efforts in recruiting, retaining, and empowering girls/women and male advocates in STEM fields,” Sims added.
